Car AC Regas and Air Con Checks in Loughborough
Is your car’s air con blowing warm, taking ages to cool the cabin or struggling to clear a misted windscreen? Duke Street Motors offers air con checks and regassing for both R134a and R1234yf systems at our workshop on King Edward Road, Loughborough.
We check the system first and only regas it if that’s what it needs. If we find a leak or a fault, we stop, show you what we found and explain your options before anything else happens.

AC Regas at Our Loughborough Garage
Warm air from the vents is the most common reason drivers book an air con regas, but low gas isn’t the only possible cause. A leak, a tired compressor, a damaged condenser or an electrical fault can all stop the system from cooling properly. That’s why we check your air con before we regas it.
Cars use one of two refrigerants, R134a or R1234yf, and they can’t be swapped or mixed. We confirm which one your car takes as part of every job, and we have the equipment to regas both.
Our approach is simple. We recover the gas that’s left in the system, run a vacuum test to make sure it’s sealed, and refill it if a regas is all it needs. If the system fails the vacuum test or we spot a fault, we stop there and talk you through what we found. You won’t pay for gas that would only leak out again.
What we check
- Refrigerant level and system pressures
- Which refrigerant your car uses: R134a or R1234yf
- Signs of leaks at pipes, seals and the condenser
- Compressor and drive belt condition
- Vent temperature and cooling performance
- Demisting problems linked to the air con
Not sure what’s wrong? Call us on 01509 214295 and we’ll book your car in for an air con check.
Common warning signs
Signs Your Car’s Air Conditioning Needs Checking
Air con problems tend to creep up gradually rather than appear overnight. These are the signs we see most often at our Loughborough workshop.
Warm air from the vents
The classic sign of low refrigerant. If the air never gets properly cold, the gas level has probably dropped, or it’s escaping through a leak.
Slow to cool the cabin
Refrigerant leaks out slowly over the years, so the air con takes longer and longer to bring the temperature down, especially on hot days.
Windows slow to demist
Air con dries the air as well as cooling it. If your windscreen takes ages to clear on cold, damp mornings, the system may not be working as it should.
Musty or damp smells
A stale smell from the vents usually comes from bacteria or an old cabin filter rather than low gas, so a regas on its own won’t fix it.
Air con cutting in and out
If the cooling comes and goes, it can point to low refrigerant or a pressure switch or electrical fault. A check shows which.
Noises when the air con is on
A rattle, squeal or grinding noise when you switch the air con on can point to the compressor, the drive belt or a related part.
These signs don’t always mean your car needs a regas. Leaks, compressor, condenser and electrical faults can cause the same symptoms, which is why we check the system first.
What to expect
What Happens During an AC Regas?
A regas isn’t like topping up the gas. We connect your car to our air con machine, recover whatever refrigerant is left and weigh it, which tells us how much the system had lost. We then hold the system under vacuum to check it’s sealed and to remove any moisture.
If the vacuum test passes, we refill the system with the exact amount of refrigerant and oil your car’s manufacturer specifies, and we add UV leak-trace dye where needed. If it fails, we don’t regas it. Filling a leaking system means paying for gas that will escape again within weeks or months, so we explain what we found instead.
Before we hand your car back, we check the pressures and measure the temperature at the vents to make sure it’s cooling properly.
A typical AC regas includes
- Confirming which refrigerant your car uses: R134a or R1234yf
- Recovering and weighing the refrigerant left in the system
- A vacuum test to check for leaks
- Refilling with the correct amount of refrigerant and oil
- Checking pressures and vent temperature before you collect your car
Which Gas Does My Car Need, R134a or R1234yf?
It depends on your car. Most cars built since 2017 use R1234yf, a newer refrigerant with a much lower environmental impact. Older cars mostly use R134a. You’ll usually find a sticker under the bonnet that names the gas, and we can confirm it from your registration when you book.
The two gases aren’t interchangeable, and each needs its own equipment. R1234yf costs more than R134a, which is the main reason air con regas prices vary from car to car.

AC Regas Cost and Turnaround
How Much Does an AC Regas Cost in Loughborough?
The price of a regas depends mainly on which refrigerant your car uses and how much gas the system holds. R1234yf is more expensive than R134a, so there’s no single price that suits every car.
Give us your registration and we’ll confirm which gas your car takes and give you a quote before you book.
How Long Does an AC Regas Take?
A regas usually takes around 30 minutes, given the system passes its vacuum test. You’re welcome to wait, or drop your car off and collect it when it’s ready.

Quick answers
AC Regas FAQs
How do I know if my car’s air conditioning needs regassing?
The usual signs are warm or barely cool air from the vents, the cabin taking longer to cool, or windows that are slow to demist. A smell or a noise usually points to something other than low gas. If you’re not sure, we can check the system before recommending a regas.
How often does car air conditioning need regassing?
There’s no fixed time for regassing. You do the regass only if it’s needed. Generally speaking every one to two years is a good guide, or sooner if it stops cooling well. Running the air con for a few minutes every week, even in winter, helps keep the seals in good condition and slows gas loss.
Which refrigerant does my car need – R134a or R1234yf?
Most cars built since 2017 use R1234yf, and older cars mostly use R134a. The sticker under the bonnet usually tells you which. If you can’t find it, give us your registration and we’ll check. We regas both.
Why is my car air conditioning not blowing cold air?
The most common cause is low refrigerant, either from normal gradual loss or a leak. A worn compressor, a damaged condenser or an electrical fault can cause the same symptom, which is why we check the system before regassing it.
Will a regas fix my air conditioning?
If the air con has slowly lost its chill and the system is sealed, a regas usually fixes it. If the system fails the vacuum test, or the fault is with a part, a regas won’t help on its own. We’ll tell you before doing the work.

How long does an AC regas take?
Usually between 30 minutes and an hour, as long as the system passes its vacuum test. If we find a leak or a fault, we’ll stop and explain what we found first.
Do you repair car air conditioning?
We carry out air con checks and regassing. If our check shows a leak or a faulty part, we’ll explain what we found and what needs to happen next. We won’t regas a system that can’t hold the gas.
Can I get my car air con regassed today?
